From Kamui:

This is an Arizona-era bushcraft/field knife my dad, Jason Hawk, made over 20 years ago, when he was living in Sedona, Arizona, years before his work on Mountain Men or No Man’s Land. It comes from his early shop days, when he was working with limited tools in a minimal shop setting.

This was an unfinished knife that he never had the chance to fully complete. I went back in and did my best to do it justice, fully finishing the blade and handle while staying true to the original piece and preserving some of the original hand-worked character that reflects that early period of his work as an artisan.

The blade is hand-forged from reclaimed high-carbon steel, from a time when he was working almost exclusively with reclaimed material; scavenging junkyards, desert finds, and old stock to source quality steel for his blades. It starts with a thick spine for strength and durability, transitioning into a clip point with a hand-filed false edge for improved piercing. Light file marks remain in this area as part of the original finish. It carries a subtle convex edge for added toughness and resistance to chipping under hard use, finished with a razor-sharp working edge.

The Cocobolo handle features a deep palm swell and rear flare giving it secure retention, a solid grip, and comfort for extended use. The integral guard adds safety on push cuts and better control when choking up. At the rear is an exposed-tang striker, influenced by his martial arts background and training during this time, reflected in this design and his other work from this period.

It is paired with a durable hand-tooled leather sheath featuring intricate tooling and his “JH” maker’s mark in an early carved form, for belt carry or general storage. The blade itself carries no maker’s mark, having been made before he had a stamp for his work.
